Jeff Peterson has been a lifelong musician for over thirty years now. Growing up in Grand Forks, ND with enthusiastic and supportive parents, Jeff began hitting drums and strumming guitars as early as three years old.
He received his first guitar at age five, learning a few chords from his father. He started formal guitar lessons about two years later. During this time, he also experimenting with the drum set since there was always a kit set up in the basement.
Throughout elementary school, Jeff continued to learn and practice both instruments, but he took a focused approach to the guitar. Also in these early years, a family band called The 3 Petes was formed with Jeff on guitar, his brother on the drums, and his father on bass.
“All of us would sing lead on different songs and get featured in different ways during our sets. Probably the best part of our little show was when we all switch instruments for different songs. That was a real crowd-pleaser.”
The 3 Petes would continue to perform throughout all of Jeff’s childhood until he graduated high school.
When he got to middle school, Jeff joined the school band’s percussion section. This began his interest in taking the drums more seriously. He began drum set study with Mike Blake at the University of North Dakota, and now his journey as both a dedicated guitarist as well as a drummer began.
Things picked up in high school when Jeff auditioned for the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band where he was selected to lead the percussion section and the drum set respectively at the school’s highest level. Participating in all things music-related, he performed numerous times with the concert band, jazz band, and pit orchestra while also playing school events with his own rock band comprised of fellow classmates. Jeff graduated high school receiving several awards for his work in music those four years.
During his final months of high school, he auditioned for a show at a regional amusement park called ValleyFair. Jeff was selected to play guitar for the following summer’s Country/Rock show called Rockin’ Roadhouse! This was Jeff’s first truly professional experience as a musician.
He moved to Minneapolis, MN to play at ValleyFair and also attend McNally/Smith College of Music in the upcoming fall semester as drum set performance major. It was during this time he began formal study with local legend and Steve Miller Band drummer, Gordy Knudtson. Gordy began molding Jeff’s technique and musicianship to build a career in music as a drummer.
In his second semester at the school of music, Jeff auditioned for a nationally touring band called PowerPlay based in Sioux Falls, SD. In the spring of 2004, Jeff got the job and hopped on the bus with PowerPlay for the next three years. During that time, Jeff played countless clubs and festivals throughout the country. PowerPlay was also called to backup numerous Rock and Roll pioneers such as Denny Laine (Wings), The Drifters, The Coasters, The Platters, Tommy Roe, Fabian, and a few R&R Hall of Famers such as Ben E. King and Percy Sledge.
In 2006 Jeff auditioned for a show band musician position with Carnival Cruise Lines. For the next year, Jeff bounced around the ocean playing drums for Las Vegas-style shows, jugglers, magicians, and lounge singers while also playing pretty much any style of music one could think of. Life on the boat really set Jeff up for the future back in the states.
In 2008 Jeff returned to Minneapolis and decided to give his own music a shot. It was at this time he met the guys from a local band called Roster McCabe. Jeff joined the band and for the next six years, Roster McCabe wrote their own music and toured the country bringing their own brand of Rock, Funk, Reggae, and Electro Jam music to the masses.
After Roster McCabe decided to disband, Jeff moved to Indianapolis, IN to join another Electro Jam band called Turbo Suit. Jeff continued to write, record, and perform with Turbo Suit for the next three years, including countless collaborations with members of Umphrey’s McGee and other notable performers in the Jam scene. Jeff was also tapped to play a few weekends as the substitute drummer for Lotus in 2016.
Jeff found himself at another crossroads in 2017, so he decided to pack up and move to Denver, CO. Denver was a frequent stop in the past, and he felt he already had a familiar feel of the city and its music scene from those previous tours. After a few months in Denver, Jeff joined Euforquestra, a Denver based Funk, Rock, and AfroBeat band. For the following three years, Euforquestra played all over the country and even went international when the band made a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo for a Cultural Exchange program. The chance to play music and share experiences with the people of Congo was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Jeff.
Here in present-day 2020, Jeff was struck with the idea to finally launch something he could call his own. Frobot Music Productions will be a vehicle for Jeff to develop himself as a producer as well as a songwriter, while also using all the skills he’s developed in the past thirty years. He hopes to create great records for as many people as possible!
